Sustainable Intensification of Cereal – Legume – Livestock Integrated Farming Systems in East and Southern Africa


As part of the Africa Research In Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING) program, this project aims to identify and validate scalable options for sustainable intensification of key farming systems in East and Southern Africa to increase food production and improve livelihoods of smallholder farmers while at the same time conserving (or improving) the natural resource base.

Interventions being implemented as part of this project include: introduction of improved crop varieties (high yielding, disease resistant, drought tolerant, nutritious and marketable food and feed crops); dissemination of best-bet crop and livestock management packages (vegetable seedling management, off-season vegetable production, efficient application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, integration of legumes in the crop rotation e.g. doubled-up legume technology and poultry feed preparation); conservation agriculture; rehabilitation and protection of natural resources (rain water harvesting, rain use efficiency and controlling soil erosion); improving food and nutrition security (reducing post-harvest losses and addressing mycotoxin contamination) as well as climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. The project teams also engage MSc and PhD level students to address important knowledge gaps.

Project sites

The project is implemented in three districts in Tanzania - Babati and Kiteto in Manyara Region of northern Tanzania as well as Kongwa District in Dodoma Region. In Malawi, the project activities are implemented in Ntcheu and Dedza Districts in central Malawi. Activities in Zambia are implemented in Katete and Chipata Districts in the Eastern Province and Lusaka District.


The project’s research activities are organized around 3 research outputs set out in the project framework document. Capacity building is a significant component of the project.
1) Research Output 1 (RO1): Situation analysis and program-wide synthesis
  • Baseline surveys in project sites in Tanzania and Malawi
  • Midline survey in Zambia
  • Study on the impact of on-farm sustainable intensification indicator interventions on the landscape
2) Research Output 2 (RO2): Integrated Systems Improvement
To ensure more active technology integration under RO2 ongoing research work has been assembled by thematic drivers. These include:
  • Crop genetic intensification
  • Natural Resource Management (NRM) based on crop ecology
  • NRM based on Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM)
  • NRM at landscape level
  • Livestock feed management
